The Sierra High Route (SHR) parallels the John Muir Trail (JMT) but goes off-trail over some challenging passes and “rock hopping.” It’s beautiful and you can spend more time looking at the beauty of the regions. This hike went from outside Bishop (on 395) south to Saw Mill Trailhead (about 40 miles south of Bishop). The hike out was 7,000 feet down (compared to the Grand Canyon which is 5,000).
